CUDA SPEEDS UP CREATIVITY FOR 'THE LAST AIRBENDER'

The ILM artists that created those amazing fire-bending sequences in The Last Airbender got a lot of help from the innovative application of GPU technology. For those scratching their heads wondering what that means, it’s using the graphics processing unit (GPU) as opposed to the central processing unit (CPU) to build frames of visual effects animation. The ability to switch this computationally intensive process to the GPU is possible thanks to the CUDA technology now embodied in Nvidia Quadro FX 4800 and FX 5800 pro graphics cards.

Last month in this space, I mentioned what I perceived as a slight hiring trend throughout the industry. Another month has gone by, and we’ve come across numerous similar announcements. I call it: “good news.”

The introduction of the Matrox MX02 Mini actually makes a little bit of video history: It’s the first third-party hardware option Avid deemed worthy of being allowed into the exclusive club with Media Composer. Matrox is well-known for its quality and value, so the partnership with Avid bodes well for both companies.

It’s that time of year again when we artists are rewarded with an update to the preceding year’s software package and we expectantly wait to find out what new improvements have been made and which bugs have been eliminated. It’s nice to see that considering it has only been six months since the past Softimage release, there is quite a spate of new tools and enhancements added into this year’s version.

There certainly is excitement surrounding the DSLR format, but we can’t forget that these cameras were a happy accident in terms of their professional use.
REVIEW: IMAGICA'S O-GI PLUG-IN SUITE

Some plug-in filters create invisible magic by quietly laboring in the background and polishing the picture. Imagica’s O-gi suite entered this essential utility category for me recently while supervising the digital intermediate on Unrequited , a feature film debut by director Jason Epperson, but more on that later. Plug-in packages often number hundreds of effects. The Imagica’s O-gi comes with only four. While this may seem like a lack of value, O-gi occupies a very specific niche traditionally filled by dedicated hardware.

Most everything in Las Vegas is described as an “experience” – the shows, casinos, hotels and even restaurants. NAB 2010 was no different, highlighting the 3D “Experience.” With 3D versions of Avatar, Clash of the Titans and Alice In Wonderland currently hitting the theatres, NAB was able to examine 3D beyond the “wow” factor, the cameras, software and projectors.

Today’s productions for film, broadcast and even the Web are seeing extremely large digital pipelines and even crazier deadlines. Media is coming from every which way, be it on Compact Flash, P2, drive or telecine. Just keeping track of the media, let alone the production schedule, who is on the job, and which tasks a certain department has, can be very daunting and at times would require you to hire a database whiz to design some custom software.

I paid $4.21 for a tube of ChapStick at my hotel gift shop… and don’t tell the girl at the register, but I would have paid more. I have come to realize that at NAB, lip balm, breath mints and water are like cigarettes in prison — invaluable, hence my NAB 2011 plan: Randi’s “Things You Should Have Remembered” booth that will sell the aforementioned items, plus moisturizer and antibacterial lotion. I’ll make millions! Millions I say!

The last HP workstation I reviewed, an incredibly outfitted xw8600 machine, was a stellar success in my opinion, and the system performed admirably for quite a long time while I pounded on it at the studio non-stop. Now, seeing as how we all, in this economy, are tumbling headlong into financial doom, I wanted my next review to be of a high-end machine that had tons of options for all budgets. HP suggested their Z800 would be perfect. The Z800 at the time of this writing is configurable from just under $2,000 to well over $10,000. That’s options!

TORONTO — Irish writer/director Neil Jordan first made an impact in Hollywood with his 1986 tale of obsessive love Mona Lisa, and then joined the big leagues with 1992’s The Crying Game , which earned six Oscar nominations and a win for his screenplay. Since then, his credits have included both big Hollywood productions and smaller films ranging from We’re No Angels and Interview with the Vampire to Michael Collins and The Butcher Boy . But Jordan’s varied work, which also includes The Brave One, Angel, The Company of Wolves, High Spirits and In Dreams , has always fared best outside the Hollywood system.

Over the past few years, the major Hollywood studios have been rapidly making the switch from video to digital files as the preferred medium for archiving film and television assets. That change has proven challenging for post houses seeking to meet those studios’ mastering needs, as they now must deliver masters in DCI-compliant file formats. A large part of the problem has been a lack of an efficient means of encoding media in JPEG2000 format, a requirement of DCI.

SANTA MONICA — In mid-March, HBO began broadcasting its new 10-part miniseries, The Pacific . Executive produced by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman, the series recreates the stories of three real-life Marines — Robert Laeckie, John Basilone and Eugene Sledge — who served during World War II. But unlike the 2001 miniseries Band of Brothers by the same executive producing team, this drama takes a look at the battle with Japan in the Pacific, as opposed to the war taking place in Eastern Europe.

HOLLYWOOD — If the mark of a great director is a unique personal vision coupled with the ability to bounce back after disaster hits, then Terry Gilliam is a very great director indeed. With such films as Jabberwocky, Time Bandits, Brazil, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, The Fisher King, Twelve Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and The Brothers Grimm , Gilliam has created a body of work that has earned the director a reputation as both an inspired visionary and a maverick with little regard for the realities of Hollywood filmmaking.

ATLANTA — “Play,” a creative form “older than culture,” according to Johan Huizinga, has served humanity in such diverse ways as entertainment, education, exercise, conflict resolution, ritual and self-expression. But it was not until the 20th Century that games and the play experiences they provide began to be perceived as an art form, as well. With nods to the past and the future, and with an open acknowledgment of all the awkwardness, bravado and measured successes thus far, the Art History of Games (www.arthistoryofgames.com) conference, held in early February, sought to more clearly explore and articulate the importance of games as a legitimate art form.

In recent years I have found ways to reduce my family’s carbon footprint: every piece of paper and box gets sorted, along with plastic cups, cans and bottles. We use reusable water bottles, bring canvas bags to the market and we don’t let the water run while brushing teeth. It’s not much, but I have to believe it helps in some way, and it teaches my kids how to be more conscious of their actions for the greater good.

Thanks to the shaky economic climate, the past year has been a very bumpy ride in Hollywood. Even so, audiences, happy to forget the recession and their financial woes for a couple of hours, headed to the theatres in healthy numbers, especially to see anything light and escapist. Here, four top directors — Sam Raimi, J.J. Abrams, Shawn Levy and Carlos Saldanha — whose films all connected with audiences everywhere, sounded upbeat for the most part as they tackled Post ’s SWOT questions and aired their views about the year ahead in terms of post technology and films.

One of the first things you’ll notice about Avid’s new 4.0 release, which runs on Mac and PC, isn’t in the feature set…it’s in the price.
Studios that have ventured into the 3D stereoscopic business see a lot of potential. More and more newly-produced content is seeing 3D release, including animated features, which has become somewhat of a standard for stereo. Concert films are also a big attraction, and audiences don't seem to mind paying a premium for an experience that can't be duplicated at home... yet. 3D TV sets are coming, and content owners are going to need their archives updated for future revenue streams.

The number of channels and the placement of the speakers vary with each format. 5.1 is the most common, but other types include many more channels and can even reproduce the experience of height.
As the world turns to HD, there is an increased focus on quality throughout the production chain. New technologies enable new, distributed workflows.
In late July, Apple updated its Final Cut Studio package with improved versions of Final Cut Pro, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, Color and Compressor. Sadly, DVD Studio Pro has succumbed to the realm of “also included” and has not received any attention this time around. For this review, I will focus Final Cut Pro 7.

HOLLYWOOD — It’s hard to believe, but it’s been 16 years since the multi-faceted Mike Judge first burst onto the scene with Beavis and Butt-Head, which debuted on MTV back in 1993. Now the writer, actor, producer, director, composer, animator and musician, whose credits include the cult hit Office Space , the film Idiocracy and the animated TV series King of the Hill, is back with a new film comedy, Extract, in which he returns to the fertile territory of the American workplace.

Artists find inspiration in many different ways. Maybe it’s a song, or a painting or the way the sunlight reflects off the water. This month, I spoke with a handful of compositors about their art and what influences their work, and what I discovered is they look at the world differently than most people. They find art in absolutely everything.

When the machine arrived we had just started a new 3D project for Comcast cable (see image on right). Three days before this test machine came we purchased a computer from Lantec systems. This worked out perfectly as we had two brand-new machines side by side in a shootout capacity.

As a filmmaker, Quentin Tarantino is a dedicated purist. He likes practical special effects, especially for a raw, blood-and-guts story set in WWII France like Inglourious Basterds - not a lot of digital manipulation and chicanery. There are some blue-screen shots, but not many. Tarantino even shot his film in Germany. So what are people like two-time VFX Oscar-winner John Dykstra and the crew at CIS doing on Inglourious Basterds ? Keeping it real. Or, in some cases, surreal.

HOLLYWOOD — The plot of G-Force may sound silly — an elite team of talking guinea pigs are trained as spies by the US government — but producer Jerry Bruckheimer has the Midas touch, and the 3D live-action/animated project quickly attracted top-notch talent, including Penelope Cruz, Nicolas Cage, Will Arnet and Bill Nighy (who starred in another little Bruckheimer project, Pirates of the Caribbean ). At the helm, and making his feature directorial debut, is another frequent Bruckheimer collaborator — Hoyt Yeatman, one of the original founders of Dream Quest Images, an Academy Award-winning visual effects company.

As I started this review of Sapphire V.3 (one of the most established and trusted workhorses in the arsenal of AVX filters around), I discovered that beyond the vast assortment of Sapphire filters I often use, I knew very little about the whole other side of this amazing toolkit that does much, much more. So I went up to GenArts in Cambridge, MA, to get a hands-on look at V.3 from Gary Oberbrunner, VP of engineering of GenArts.

While Avid is back at the South Hall with a booth after sitting out 2008, other companies have decided against exhibiting in 2009 — Quantel, Filmlight and Red among them. While attendance is expected to be down, so are the room rates, giving some a compelling reason to make the trip, even in this economy.
