GLYPH RELEASES COMPACT 500GB DRIVE

The PortaGig 800 uses Oxford's 934 chip and Seagate's Momentus 2.5 inch SATA drives, which are available in either 5,400- or 7,200rpm spindle speeds. The unit has an 8MB cache and is capable of 76MB/sec. sustained transfer rates using the FireWire 800 port. Its FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 Hi-Speed interfaces make it compatible with Mac, Windows and Linux systems.

The unit's black, anodized aluminum case measures approximately three inches wide by five inches deep, and weighs less than 10 ounces. Shock protection detects if the unit has been dropped and moves the read/write head to safety. Because it's bus powered, it can be used without AC power. If bus power is not available or is insufficient, the included power supply can be used.

The 5,400rpm PortaGig ($299) began shipping in January, and the 500GB 7,200rpm PortaGig ($349) will ship February 1st. Glyph also offers both 5,400- and 7,200rpm models in 160GB, 250GB and 320GB capacities.
