August 29, 2011

SANTA MONICA — Katy Perry’s Firework music video, which took home top honors at MTV’s Video Music Awards this weekend, was posted by Radium/Reel FX ( www.radium.com). Director Dave Meyers of @Radical Media ( www.radicalmedia.com) selected the studio to provides visual effects, online and finishing services.

Firework won "Video of the Year," and features Perry inspiring hope in several individuals, who are in troubling situations. She reminds them that everyone has a fire inside — it just needs to be ignited.

The video was shot over four nights in various locations around the city of Budapest, Hungary. Radium/Reel FX’s VFX supervisor Kevin Althans and producer Leigh Mergehenn traveled to Budapest for the shoot. Althans worked closely with Meyers in planning the logistics for capturing practical effects during the shoot and preparing for the extensive CG effects that would be created in post.

A team of 40 artists in Radium/Reel FX’s two locations in Dallas and Santa Monica, worked around the clock for two weeks to generate over 60 effects shots for the music video. The studio relied on Side Effects Houdini, Autodesk Maya and Particular for After Effects. Final finishing was performed using Autodesk Inferno at both locations.
