SIGGRAPH: Organic Motion shows marker-less mocap system
August 9, 2011

VANCOUVER — Organic Motion (www.organicmotion.com), based in NYC, has released a new marker-less motion capture system. OpenStage is based on proprietary computer vision software and high-speed color cameras, and allows for multiple actor tracking and basic prop tracking. The solution doesn’t require a backdrop and works in larger scanning spaces than marker-based systems. It is also portable and can be calibrated within a few minutes.

Organic Motion is targeting three markets with the solution: animation, education and interactive exhibits. For the animation industry specifically, studios can benefit from OpenStage’s accuracy and ability to track multiple actors. It also can serve as a solution for quickly previsualizing projects.

Several companies have already committed to using the solution, including Game On Audio in LA, which will employ OpenStage to simultaneously capture voice and full body performances. The School of Visual Arts in NYC and UCSC, Santa Cruz have also made commitments. And ZeroC7 in Japan has plans to use the motion captures system for animation production as well as for public events.
