Super Bowl: Thwak! scores Sony's 'Surgeon'
February 7, 2011
NEW YORK — Thwak! Music (www.thwak.com) handled the music and sound design for a new Sony ad that appeared during the Super Bowl. Surgeon is set in the backstreets of a bustling Asian village, where an underground Doctor Frankenstein is fitting the Android with human thumbs.

McCann Worldwide conceived the spot, which was directed by Noam Murro of Biscuit Filmsworks. The commercial touts the soon-to-be-available Sony Ericsson Xperia Play phone/gaming system, which looks like a PlayStation Portable, morphed with a smart phone.

Thwak founder Tony Verderosa scored the :60, working within a tight time frame to deliver a rhythmic, tense original piece. Verderosa says the track needed to be orchestral, cinematic and tribal, without ever stepping on the narrative. It was recorded at Avatar Studios in New York with fellow Thwak! composer Mark Petrie contributing.

Verderosa also served as music supervisor on the project.

Mackenzie Cutler’s Gavin Cutler edited the piece, and Method in New York provided visual effects. Joe O'Connell at Blast Digital in New York mixed the project.
