Digital Domain to adopt OpenVDB
August 6, 2012
GLENDALE, CA — Digital Domain is one of the first studios to adopt DreamWorks Animation SKG’s open source release of OpenVDB, a powerful tool for use in volumetric effects. OpenVDB uses a new data structure for efficient representation of sparse, time-varying volumetric data discretized on a 3D grid. The result allows artists and animators to make more efficient use of scalable volumetric data.

“OpenVDB, which was developed by former Digital Domain employee Dr. Ken Museth, offers a large step forward in the size of volumetric effects possible,” says Darin Grant, CTO of Digital Domain Media Group. “Dr. Museth also made significant advancements in volumetric processing while at Digital Domain. Insights he gained from that work led to the development of OpenVDB.”
