'Game of Thrones' crowned at Creative Arts Emmys

LOS ANGELES — The fantasy series "Game of Thrones" was the royal winner this past Saturday at the 2012 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, as the popular HBO saga was crowned the winner in six categories, including Outstanding Visual Effects, Outstanding Makeup, Outstanding Costumes, Outstanding Art Direction (single-camera), Outstanding Sound Mixing, and Sound Editing.

Based on A Song of Fire and Ice, a series of medieval-era fantasy novels by author George R.R. Martin, Game of Thrones earned a total of 11 Emmy nominations in this, its second season.

Among the networks, HBO earned a 17 Creative arts Emmys, followed by CBS with 13 and PBS with 11.

In terms of visual effects, “Game of Thrones” was awarded the prize for Outstanding Visual Effects for the episode “Valar Morghulis.” The Emmy for Oustanding Visual Effects in a Supporting Role went to “Boardwalk Empire” for the episode “Georgia Peaches.”

Taking the award for Outstanding Animated Program was “The Penguins of Madagascar: The Return of the Revenge of Dr. Blowhole” (Nickelodeon). For Outstanding Short-Format Animated Program, the winner was “Eggscellent” (Cartoon Network). 

There were four winners for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation: Jill Daniels, background paint, for Disney “Phineas and Ferb—Doof Dynasty” (Disney Channel); Bill Schwab, character design for “Disney Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice” (ABC); Robertryan Cory, character design, “Secret Mountain Fort Awesome—Nightmare Sauce” (Cartoon Network); Chris Tsirgiotis, background design, “Secret Mountain Fort Awesome—Nightmare Sauce” (Cartoon Network). 

The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awarded the 2011-2012 Creative Arts Primetime Emmy Awards for programs and individual achievements at the 64th Emmy Awards presentation at the Nokia Theatre at LA Live.
