POP SOUND MIXES TYLENOL SPOT IN SURROUND

SANTA MONICA, CA — POP Sound’s (www.popsound.com) Mitch Dorf recently completed the 5.1 mix for a new high definition spot for Tylenol. The Holes commercial also has an SD version and uses a weave of sound design, music and voiceover to promote the advanced design of Tylenol Rapid Release Gels. Computer animation demonstrates how particles escape through the laser drill-designed holes in the Tylenol capsule.

Dorf’s challenge was to heighten the feel of the spot’s dramatization sequence. “We wanted the sound to emanate from inside the capsule and burst out,” he recalls. “Sonically, we needed to communicate that the medicine was leaving the confined space of the capsule and rapidly dispersing.”

The spot’s music was created by Musikvergnuegen, with Machinehead providing sound design. The combination provided just the right amount of “burst,” says Dorf. “[It] was a matter of space and placement, and using the right EQ, balance and reverb. As a result, we were able to make a small space appear to be a much larger space.”

Dorf performed the surround mix using AMS Neve Audiofile and Digidesign Pro Tools systems. He also prepared a stereo mix.
