KATHRYN HEMPEL CUTS 'BLANKET' FOR MCDONALD'S

CHICACO - Cutters’ Kathryn Hempel edited one of McDonald’s latest spots, this one directed by Tony Kaye and produced by Supply & Demand. Conceived by DDB/Chicago, a boy’s separation from his Blanket is juxtaposed with his mom’s preoccupation with her cell phone.

Mom tells the boy, “Pretty soon, you won’t even miss it,” as she takes away the security blanket. Scenes of her on the phone are intercut throughout the commercial. The boy goes about his day, spending time at a play group before finally being reunited with his mom, who takes him to McDonald’s. While eating, her phone rings, and the young boy snaps up the phone, offering his mom the same encouraging words she gave him earlier.

“I connected with the tender story on many levels,” says Hempel, who cut Blanket on an Avid Media Composer Adrenaline system. “In editing this story, I kept the perspective of the little boy in mind while simultaneously relating to the mom.”

Soldesignfx in Chicago handled effects and compositing. Spank Music in Chicago provided the original music and Another Country’s Jeremy Rogers handled sound design.
