Sony's 'Behind the Lens' contest seeks student submissions

PARK RIDGE, NJ — Sony Electronics is giving next generation filmmakers and the schools they attend a chance to win a new PMW-F3 handheld digital 35mm camcorders via its "Behind the Lens" film student contest (www.Sony.com/behindthelens). The contest is open to any student enrolled in a film or video digital media program at an accredited college or university, and challenges them to create a series of three-minute digital stories, which will be voted on by the public and a panel of expert judges.

The Behind the Lens contest is accepting submissions from March 1 through March 15. For Round 1, students should submit a video based on any topic or theme. It can be produced on any HD camera format. The public will be able to view and vote on their favorite videos from March 21 to 28. Then, using the public vote for the top videos, a panel of industry judges will announce 10 semifinalists on April 14.

Students who advance to the second round will be loaned Sony PMW-EX3 cameras to shoot the next series of shorts. Three finalists that move on to the third round will be loaned the PMW-F3 to use for their final submission. The second and third rounds will have themes — "curiosity" and "journey" — that the students will have to follow.

The grand-prize winner will be named on June 1.
