New book draws advice from leading editors

NEW YORK CITY — "Art of the Cut: Conversations with Film and TV editors” is a new book by author/editor Steve Hullfish. As a feature film and TV editor, Hullfish’s credits include Courageous, War Room, Champion, The Reliant and the theatrically-released feature documentary, Clinton Inc. He also worked on The Oprah Winfrey Show for a decade.

Available on Amazon and through Focal Press’s Website, Art of the Cut was developed from nearly 100 hours of interviews with 50 of the top film and TV editors in the world. Combined, they have more than a dozen Oscar wins for “Best Editing” and over 40 nominations, as well as numerous Emmy wins.

The editors in the book have cut some of the biggest and most influential films in the history of cinema. The interviews were conducted by Hullfish. Topics covered include project management, storytelling, pacing, rhythm, collaboration, music, sound effects, structure, documentaries and miscellaneous wisdom. There are also additional “Web chapters” covering additional topics like cutting VFX-heavy films, specific NLEs and the stories behind editing specific scenes from movies and TV shows.
