Skylab opens six new Avid suites in Vancouver

VANCOUVER — Skylab Post (http://skylabhq.com) is a new post production studio that offers turnkey Avid editing suites at its Gastown location. The studio has partnered with Screen-Dragon to offer six Avid editorial suites — three of which can double as audio mixing or dailies rooms — along with a 20-seat, 18-foot Dolby Atmos theater for on-site screenings. Color grading is made possible via FilmLight’s Baselight system.

James Tocher is a partner and CEO at Skylab, which was formerly Digital Film Group & Central. The company was founded before the days of digital projection, and became a go-to destination for filmmakers wanting to transfer their digitally-shot features to 35mm film for distribution. In the years that followed, it became the one of the first full-service Digital Intermediate companies in Vancouver, offering film scanning, color grading and film recording under one roof. Over 20 years, Tocher says they’ve had a lot of success predicting trends and developing the services filmmakers need.

The latest iteration of Skylab Post is located in Vancouver’s Gastown. The facility offers sound-proofed suites, each equipped with Avid Media Composer running on the latest hardware, along with NEXIS shared storage. Skylab also offers full support, security and fibre internet.

General manager Chris Macdonald says that while the studio often works on larger projects, “We pride ourselves on being incredibly easy to work with, within a friendly, positive, transparent and less corporate environment.”

“With so much shooting in Vancouver, we recognized the need for a flexible, easy-to-use, and comfortable space to come edit your films - with the option to review them on the big screen,” adds Tocher.
