Synth quartet Ladytron (www.ladytron.com) recently premiered the lead single from their upcoming album, “Time’s Arrow.” The City of Angels video comes right in time for Halloween and is full of haunting imagery.
Manuel Nogueira directed the project, which plays as a choreographed musical thriller inspired by cult favorites of Roeg and Argento. The video was shot in the mansion of architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha and stars actress Bianca Comparato (Netflix’s 3%). Comparato plays a photographer who is entranced and drawn in by a mysterious force.
“I’m such a fan of Ladtyron,” says the actress. “I was lucky enough to be in the music video…The whole experience was a dream come true.”
According to director Nogueira, the shoot took place over one long day across two locations. In addition to architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha’s huge house, the second location was a real photo lab.
“We shot with an Alexa LF, Zeiss Supreme primes and a Canon 50mm dream lens,” Nogueira recalls. “Cinematographer Juliano Lopes chose - and chased - this lens to achieve this ethereal vintage look.”
Nogueira edited the piece himself, collaborating with Daniel Hunt and getting support from post house Liquor Media in São Paulo, Brazil.
“Music videos are all about challenges,” says Nogueira. “Creating a story and finding the pieces of it inside a budget are always the challenge, and at the same time, what makes the process interesting and independent.”
Ladytron is Helen Marnie, Mira Aroyo, Daniel Hunt and Reuben Wu. “Time’s Arrow” will be available from Cooking Vinyl on January 20, 2023.
