3 Body Problem: Editor Michael Ruscio

Netflix’s 3 Body Problem shows how a young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time, and into the present day. When the laws of nature unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of scientists join forces with an unorthodox detective to confront humanity’s greatest threat.

The series stars Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Rosalind Chao, Liam Cunningham, Eiza González, Jess Hong, Marlo Kelly, Alex Sharp, Sea Shimooka, Zine Tseng, Saamer Usmani, Benedict Wong and Jonathan Pryce. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (Game of Thrones) and Alexander Woo (The Terror: Infamy, True Blood) are co-creators.

Michael Ruscio (pictured), ACE, edited Episode 5 of the dramatic, sci-fi series, which spans eight episodes.

“Crafting the destruction of the converted oil tanker in ‘Judgment Day’ - Episode 5 of Three Body Problem, required a focused concentration not unlike the operation of a ship,” Ruscio recalls. “While editing this sequence, I relied on the expertise of the VFX team and my assistant Josh Carley, who did the preliminary sound design, as well as the guidance of director Minkie Spiro and our showrunners, David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo. I needed to stitch together the practical elements, combine them with previs and follow the designed architecture of the ship’s levels logically. At the same time, I wanted to give space for characters, especially Mike Evans, played by Jonathan Pryce, to maximize their journey to an ultimate demise. The needlework of sewing these individual elements together into a whole fabric and then laying in sound to distinguish the horror on the canal versus the sense of isolation for the main characters in the trailer, still following a syncopated action based on the nanofiber action, was a challenge and a thrill.”
