Moonshot Film Challenge helping to kickstart filmmaking careers

NEW YORK CITY - Moonshot Initiative will present the results of its Moonshot Film Challenge on January 16th at the School of Visual Arts in New York City (333 W. 23 St., New York, NY 10011). The Film Challenge groups accepted participants together to create a film crew that covers all aspects of production and post. Sponsors provide cinema-quality equipment, as well as production insurance and waivers to submit entries to various film festivals.

The goal of the challenge is to expand the careers of women and gender-expansive filmmakers. Since filmmakers are often expected to have a reel in order to get hired, many are forced to fund their own work, which can be prohibitively expensive. Moonshot's year-round fundraising helps to offset that burden, while allowing filmmakers to focus on building their network and creating high-quality material.
Past films made during Film Challenges have been accepted into over 100 festivals. This year's challenge featured five teams: Team Gina, Team Celine, Team Patricia, Team Mira and Team Emerald - each named for a female or gender-expansive filmmaker. The genre for each team's film was determined by pulling genres out of a hat. Once they had their assigned genre, each team was challenged with writing, shooting and editing a film over just two weekends. The results will be presented at the January 16th screening at SVA, beginning at 8:00pm. This year's films are titled A Nice Place to Visit, Life Begins, New World Orioles, Out of Time and The Swipe. While this is a challenge, it is not a competition.
Tickets for the Moonshot Film Challenge are now available, with prices starting at $34. Visit www.moonshotinitiative.org to learn more.
