SNL short 'MAHAspital (The New Pitt)' receives Emmy nom for editing

Editors Christopher Salerno and Mak Makower are both recognized with Emmy nominations in the Outstanding Picture Editing for Variety Programming (Segment) for their work on the SNL short, “MAHAspital (The New Pitt).” The short stars Harry Styles and appears as a trailer for the program, which is a spoof on the popular Pittsburgh hospital series The Pitt, if it were overseen by health expert Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

“The challenge was to capture the intention and tension of The Pitt without losing the pace and rhythm that comedy requires,” explains Salerno. “The trailer structure gave us the freedom to preserve the atmosphere of the series while shaping every new reveal into a larger comedic escalation.”

Makower adds that the schedule demanded an editorial process that was both disciplined and adaptable.

“Footage is arriving while the cut is already taking shape, and every department is moving toward the same immovable deadline,” he shares. “Our job was to keep that process fluid while protecting the tension, timing and clarity of every beat.”

The segment was shot on Friday and completed for Saturday night’s live broadcast. “MAHAspital” required Salerno and Makower to transform The Pitt's signature long-take tension into tightly calibrated trailer comedy in less than 36 hours. The show is known for its extended takes, minimal cutting and the absence of non-diegetic music. These techniques help create its distinctive realtime urgency, but are nearly the inverse of what editors ordinarily need to generate trailer momentum and land comedy. Because “MAHAspital” was conceived as a trailer rather than a direct scene parody, the editors used the language of theatrical trailer editing to preserve the medical drama’s seriousness while building toward increasingly absurd “Make America Healthy Again” treatments.

Footage began entering editorial around noon on Friday while filming continued. Makower led the assistant editorial team through the rapid ingest, organization and preparation of incoming material, allowing the editors to begin cutting immediately and continue through the night. Salerno and Makower then worked with director Christopher Werner, the writers, producers and cast through Saturday’s dress rehearsal, making final refinements until the sketch aired at approximately 11:30pm.
