SAN FRANCISCO - Phoenix Editorial and Designs (www.phoenixedit.com) recently wrapped up work on a :60 spot for EA Games
promoting Need for Speed: Carbon, a new
videogame that pits car tuners against each other as the battle for territory
on dangerous canyon roads.
The Night Sky spot
was directed by Raf Wathion and produced by Roses Are Blue for ad agency Heat.
Phoenix’s Bob Frisk cut the :60 commercial - which also appears in :30, :20 and
:10 versions - using an Avid Media Composer. Autodesk Smoke was used for visual
effects.
The spot is shot from the POV of a street racer, who crashes
through a guardrail and down a ravine. The action is actually shown in reverse,
enhancing the drama of the crash.
Some footage of the racers was shot at 360 frames per second
on a high-speed photosonic camera to show the slow motion detail. Sound design
by Endless Noise's reinforces the twisting metal and breaking glass of the
crash.
Phoenix’s Matt Silverman produced motion graphics for the
commercial. Logo animation was created in Adobe After Effects. Mac Guff in
Santa Monica provided visual effects. Company 3 in Santa Monica handled
telecine.
