LOS ANGELES – Portrait Displays, the developer of Calman color calibration software, has teamed up with post production studio Company 3 to present the third season of Color Matters. The original documentary web series (portrait.com/color-matters) is dedicated to celebrating colorists and color scientists who collaborate with directors and cinematographers to define the visual language of film and television. Season 3 – “Masters of Color ” – will premiere on September 28th at an event at Company 3’s Harlow location in Hollywood, CA.
Color Matters Season 3 features senior colorists (pictured L-R) Jill Bogdanowicz and Stephen Nakamura, along with Dr. John Quartel, VP imaging science, who offer viewers a broad look at how Company 3 shapes the future of color in film before narrowing into intimate profiles of its featured talent. Over the course of eight episodes, artist will be introduced through their credentials and personal stories, while their craft, techniques and influence are explored through the iconic films in their portfolios. The web series will look at why color matters in defining the visual language of a film or series, how color influences the viewer’s experience and why calibration tools like Calman play a crucial role in preserving creative intent.
Color Matters was introduced in 2022 as Portrait Displays’ original consumer edutainment format with the premise of shinning a light on the creative work of colorists and color scientists. While color and image manipulation strictly rely on image science, numbers and technical diagrams, “Masters of Color” translates the science and artistry of color grading into human terms.
“Color is one of the most powerful storytelling tools we have, setting the visual tone and preserving the emotional core of a film,” explains Stefan Sonnenfeld, CEO of Company 3. “Maintaining that creative intent from our grading suites to the viewer’s screen requires complete precision. Color Matters highlights the dedication and expertise behind this craft, and we are proud to support a project that showcases the vital role colorists play in modern cinema.”
“We collaborated on Color Matters to spotlight the artists who shape the visual language of the stories we love,” adds Steph Leal, vice president of marketing at Company 3. “Partnering with Portrait Displays and Calman for Season 3 was a natural alignment because we share a commitment to technical excellence and artistic integrity. This season offers audiences a rare look at how science and artistry come together to elevate the viewing experience.”
Episode 1 will debut on September 29th, and the series will be distributed globally via Portrait Displays’ YouTube channel and through extensive media collaborations.
