  • Colorist Society International: Color and COVID-19
Colorist Society International: Color and COVID-19

Like other workers around the world, many colorists have had to adopt work-at-home solutions as the COVID-19 pandemic has spread around the globe. On the plus side, high speed internet connections and virtual collaboration and communications tools are available that make it possible, if not ideal, to continue projects from home studios or other remote sites. On the other hand, with film, television and advertising production at a virtual standstill, artists face the prospect of furlough or unemployment once projects that were already shot when the crisis began are complete. Animation and restoration may be exceptions to this bleak outlook, but we all hope for an end to the crisis and a return to some semblance of normalcy…whatever that might mean.

Even as "social distancing" has become our new way of life, CSI is moving forward. As you'll read below, we are excited to welcome award-winning colorist Walter Volpatto as a CSI Fellow. An effort has also begun to launch a local chapter in Dallas. We are continuing our campaign to have "colorist" recognized as a distinct category on IMDB as well as our efforts to recruit new members and corporate supporters. Additionally, in these challenging times, we encourage members to take advantage of the forum on our website. It is an excellent resource for connecting with colleagues, sharing information about employment opportunities and exchanging tips on working from home and other issues of the day. We also welcome you to use the forum to offer your ideas for making CSI a stronger, more effective organization.

Bluefish444 releases KRONOS K8 Professional Installer for Windows, version 2020.14

Bluefish444, manufacturer of the professional video industry's highest-quality uncompressed 4K/UHD SDI, ASI, Video Over IP & HDMI I/O cards and mini converters, has released a new Professional Installer for Windows, version 2020.14.

The release of the new Professional Installer 2020.14 is a seminal moment in which the stability of Bluefish drivers meet the next generation of Bluefish hardware, adding compatibility for the KRONOS K8 and enhanced performance for Epoch video I/O cards across all Bluefish-supported applications.

Software compatibility has been widened to include support for Foundry VFX applications and existing support for 3rd-party content creation tools enhanced via compatibility upgrades to the latest versions. 4K/UHD and HD performance for Epoch customers will see a marked improvement, and K8 enables ultra-demanding 4K/UHD workflows in SDR and HDR with the most popular content creation tools available today.

Professional artists using Assimilate SCRATCH, Unity, CasparCG, Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer and ProTools software will benefit greatly from the improved Epoch performance and access to the latest K8 hardware enabling multi-channel 4K/UHD SDR and HDR workflows. The list of supported software grows even further through Bluefish's DirectShow support, with applications such as vMix, Telestream Wirecast, Resolume, Dataton, OBS, VLC, and many more, now having compatibility with K8.

Bluefish welcomes Foundry's Nuke and Nuke Studio to the list of supported 3rd-party content creation tools.

  • WHY POST AND VFX SUPERVISORS SHOULD BE DEMANDING /i TECHNOLOGY LENS METADATA
WHY POST AND VFX SUPERVISORS SHOULD BE DEMANDING /i TECHNOLOGY LENS METADATA

Why is lens metadata important for post-production? Because by feeding it to post-production teams, they not only save time and cost but also ensure a better-quality product. The digital data takes the guesswork out of many processes; VFX artists can therefore create effects and 3D models that are more accurate, with much greater speed.

Cooke Optics' open source /i Technology, supported by over 40 industry leaders including Sony, RED, Avid and Atomos, provides vital information including lens setting, aperture and depth-of-field and hyperfocal distance. The latest /i 3 version also includes inertial tracking data, shading and distortion data, which are particularly useful for VFX artists.

DP Sam McCurdy shot Season 2 of Neflix's Lost In Space with Cooke 5/i prime lenses, capturing /i Technology lens metadata to aid post-production. " Lost in Space is obviously a very heavy VFX show, and the VFX producer and supervisor insist on all the information they can get," McCurdy said. "We pride ourselves on the blend of real and VFX on the show, and being able to realistically recreate the data of a lens and the aberrations of a lens sometimes make all the difference. Both the 5/i and the /i Technology sensor proved their worth every day."

DP Nicolaj Bruel also recorded lens data throughout the shoot of Pinocchio, to supply to VFX house One Of Us for additional CGI work. Theo Demiris, VFX Supervisor, One of Us, said, "It all comes down to re-creating the exact movement and properties of the camera in the digital world, and having access to all of that information meant that we could very quickly 'solve' the camera and recreate it with precision. Having experienced this workflow and the level of data available, it's really hard to go back to projects that aren't set up in the same way."
