Digital Domain nominated for VFX work
January 24, 2012
PORT ST. LUCIE, FL — Two films worked on by Digital Domain Media Group (www.ddmg.co) have been nominated for the visual effects Academy Award: Real Steel and Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

Digital Domain VFX supervisor Erik Nash is recognized with his second Academy Award nomination, and Digital Domain digital effects supervisor Swen Gillberg with his first for their work on Dreamworks’ Real Steel. As the lead digital production studio on the movie, Digital Domain led a team that created a new virtual production process that enabled director Shawn Levy to direct CG characters as if they were actually on set.

Paramount’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon marks Digital Domain’s return to the franchise for the third time. VFX supervisor Matthew Butler received his first Academy Award nomination. The studio’s work included creating new and returning robot characters and a key sequence featuring wing-suited skydivers bailing out of helicopters and flying over the burning city of Chicago. The company also contributed 2D-to-3D conversion services.

Nash, Gillberg and Butler will attend the Academy Awards on Sunday, February 26, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center.
