Review: GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition
Published: March 6, 2014

If you’ve been working in post for more than a few years, you’ve seen the momentum shift from tape to tapeless.
Review: Blackmagic Design's UltraStudio Pro & SmartScope Duo
Published: October 8, 2013

It wasn’t so long ago when you had to travel into the office to do some video and effects work because of the demanding hardware requirements. Today, you can go pick up the latest Mac Pro or HP 8770w mobile workstation and have your own multimedia powerhouse at Starbucks. With super speed USB 3.0 you can run external hard drive RAIDs and specialized I/O hardware on your dining room table.
Review: Avid Media Composer 7
Published: August 8, 2013

Avid Media Composer 7 is bringing the heat to post production workflows and data management everywhere. Full disclosure: I am a huge Avid fan. I read the forums. I follow the Avid gurus on Twitter. I read all the #postchat’s, and I work with it daily, so I am very excited for this release of Media Composer.
Review: HP's z820 Red Edition Workstation
Published: April 3, 2013

Have you ever worked on a multimedia workstation that felt about five, seven or even 10 years too old for the masterpiece you are creating? Then it’s time for you to upgrade your ride, because the days of “getting by” on your 32-bit dual-core laptop are quickly growing dim. The HP z820 Red Edition workstation will quench your thirst with its dual 8-core Intel Xeon 3.1GHz processors each boasting a 20MB cache, standard 32GBs of memory, and a wide array of hard drive stocking options.
Review: Avid Media Composer 6.5
Published: February 4, 2013

Over the last year nonlinear editors have been shaken and strained. But Avid has been a mainstay in broadcast television, film and audio production/post for a little over a quarter of a century and continues to dominate with its latest update to Media Composer and Symphony 6.5.
Review: Tiffen Dfx V.3 Creative Editing Suite
Published: December 7, 2012

One name that is a standard in photography and videography is Tiffen. With their wide array of filters, from circular polarizers to neutral density filters and even infrared filters, people like me who only dabble in photography have definitely heard the name Tiffen. Naturally, when I was scrubbing through my Twitter feed on #Postchat and all other forms of post hash tags like #postdontstop, I found the Tiffen Dfx V.3 video plug-in to be blazing trails on the scene.
Review: Yanobox Moods
Published: May 14, 2012

I’m in a mood: nostalgic, orangey, reminiscent. An editor will constantly go to their toolbox for a favorite unique and awe-inspiring treatment, usually a pre-set color effect or a plug-in with a few pre-sets but no true three-way color correction.
Review: iQstor XL
Published: March 16, 2012

In today’s cost cutting post environment, line producers are tightening their budgets tighter than ever before. The large budgets for purchasing post equipment are fleeting; everything needs to be better, faster and cheaper. Oh and by the way it can never fail. As an assistant editor half my time is spent fixing problems with edit systems, editors, assistants, email, you name it we are responsible for fixing it. One thing that I have to rely on is my storage infrastructure. If half my media corrupts, guess who is expected to come in over a weekend or two to fix it?
Review: Glyph GPT50 external hard drive
Published: February 2, 2012

Working in the fast and furious world of post does not allow for fumbling. As an assistant editor working on reality TV shows, I constantly use external hard drives for transferring tapeless media, backing up audio files, backing up project files and QuickTime exports. No matter what drive the company buys, there are always millions of power supplies and adapters that need to be kept with each one.
Review: Avid Media Composer V.5.5.2 & AJA's IO Express
Published: August 8, 2011

The day has finally come where someone like me — who is always trying to expand his editing skills — no longer has to purchase a used Avid Adrenaline and an old version of Media Composer to really learn the Avid Media Composer suite.
