Review: iZotope's RX5 Advanced
Published: January 18, 2016

Editors are constantly running into audio problems that seem almost impossible to solve in the edit room. Lack of room tone can make frankenbites sound atrocious. Plosives and bad mics force us to find alternate takes. And background sound can ruin good dialogue. In addition, crackles, line noise, reverberation, clicks and pops can all conspire to force us to the rely on the post sound mixer or dumping material altogether.
Review: Editors Keys' Avid Media Composer Dedicated Backlit PC Keyboard
Published: May 12, 2015

I first heard about this keyboard as a Kickstarter-funded venture and it seemed pretty cool. Editors Keys is a company dedicated to providing quality keyboards for a lot of different editing platforms, but their claim is that this is the first backlit keyboard for Avid.
Review: NewBlueFX's TotalFX
Published: March 9, 2015

In July 2008, I reviewed NewBlueFX's first foray into the AVX world...simply called NewBlueFX. This was at a time when third-party support for Media Composer was on a bit of a decline and I was interested in finding out about this little company that was taking a chance with Avid when they were already successfully supplying filters for several other platforms.
Review: Boris FX's Continuum Complete 9
Published: August 5, 2014

Continuum Complete from Boris FX has had a unique relationship with Avid since 2005, when BCC was first bundled with MC, allowing it to become the de facto third-party effects package for Avid for many years. Since then, a number of competitors have followed, creating a cat and mouse game with constantly-evolving features. I believe this release of BCC9 represents a light-speed jump for the BCC line and a boon for editors. And remember, BCC isn't just an effects package — it also has a powerful suite of tools that range from titling to keying — a lot under the hood. Note: BCC is now no longer bundled with Media Composer.
Review: GenArts Sapphire V.7 for Media Composer
Published: May 6, 2013

Since 2000, Sapphire, GenArts’ premier filter set for Avid Media Composer, has arguably set the bar for special effects solely built within the editing system’s environment. Its relatively high price has kept Sapphire out of the hands of many primary users — the freelance editor — and allowed other lower-priced competitors to permeate the marketplace, but Sapphire’s arsenal is still among the most powerful in the industry.
Review: NewBlueFX's Titler Pro
Published: September 4, 2012

One of the perennial complaints you’ll hear from Avid users concerns the Title Tool in Media Composer. While great for basic slating and lower thirds, as well as crawls and scrolls, it’s basically unchanged since its introduction and has few bells and whistles.
Review: The Avid Assistant Editor’s Handbook
Published: June 8, 2012

Before I begin this review, a few words about assistant editors — they are the unsung heroes of post.
Review: Avid's Phrasefind & AV3's GET
Published: May 16, 2011

I thought it appropriate to combine both products in one review as both are based on the powerful Nexidia phonetic search engine and are tools that will essentially change the way we edit. Nexidia, by the way, is well-known in the IT industry for its work in developing phonetic search technologies.
Book Review: 'Avid Agility'
Published: December 28, 2010

I haven't met Steven Cohen, but after reading his book, Avid Agility ($36.88), I feel like I have. Cohen was a pioneer in nonlinear editing, cutting the first studio feature to use Avid (Lost in Yonkers). He's taught at the AFI, was publisher of the Editor's Guild magazine and co-founded the Avid Editor's Advisory Committee. And, now, he's published the most ambitious and comprehensive book on Avid Media Composer I've read. (Avid should include this with every Composer system sold).

Recently, Kirk Arnold, COO of Avid Technology, spoke with Post about their new Media Composer 5 and the future of the company.
